As this school year comes to a close, students are left asking themselves, “what should we do this summer?” Kids are left sitting at home thinking there is nothing for them to do, but contrary to popular belief, there are a ton of activities to do around the Houston area- and for cheap too. So grab a group of friends and head down to these places to enjoy a fun, and cheap summer.
Here are the top 10 best places to go this summer in Houston.
10. Sample food at Canino’s Market- this is a family owned farmers market that has been around since 1958. On every 2nd Saturday of the month, they offer free food tastings from 10am-noon.
9. Take a picnic in Hermann Park- Not only is this the most popular and one of the most beautiful public parks in Houston, it is also in the heart of the museum district. Enjoy gorgeous sights as you dine on the lawn with your friends.
8. Catch a movie at Market Square Park- Market Square Park offers different movies for free throughout the summer. Search their website for exact dates and titles. Be sure to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets with you when you visit.
7. Bring your pups to play at the Johnny Steele Dog Park- both you and your furry best friend will be able to enjoy this fun and beautiful dog park.
6. Enjoy art at the Project Row Houses- this row of restored homes in the Third Ward have been turned into a locally based art studio. The visits and views are free, but they do accept donations to help keep this project alive.
5. Visit the art car museum- This unique and abstract gallery is sure to impress as you see the many different crazily decked out cars.
4. Watch the bats at Waugh Drive Bridge- You and your friends can be amazed as you watch over 200,000 bats emerge from the bridge every day at sunset.
3. Get your picture taken at the Water Wall- This U-shaped waterfall spills 78,500 gallons of recycled water in under three and a half hours. There are also almost 200 live oak trees to relax under.
2. Catch a show at Miller Outdoor Theatre- There is a variety of free shows that are offered from March through October. Pack blankets, a picnic and bring friends for a day of fun.
1. Visit Houston Arboretum & Nature Center- This serene 155 acre sanctuary will provide you with any peace you may need during this summer vacation.
