Person of The Week: Hannah Garcia
NHS President
National Honors Society is an elite group of students that have met certain requirements to be held at such high regard. Among these students, the only leadership roles are the officers, junior Hannah Garcia recently took the most prestigious title for the coming year.
Garcia was recently named the NHS president for Cy woods, after a year of service.
“I joined NHS initially because I truly respect the things it represents,” Garcia said, “like integrity, academics, service, and leadership. I had the leadership positions, volunteer hours, and the GPA necessary to join, so I figured I may as well try to become a part of it.”
NHS is a volunteer work based organization, so the members must be giving individuals.
“NHS serves as a great reminder that high school isn’t all about academics,” Garcia said. “It’s also important to give back, to serve others, and to balance your time between things meant to help yourself and things meant to help other people. And I’m sure that in the coming year, it’s also going to teach me a whole lot about leadership.”
Garcia was put in the running based on her merit and had to face several trials to achieve the title of NHS President.
“The process for running for president had a popular vote, an anonymous vision statement vote, an essay, an application, teacher recommendations, and an interview with the two NHS sponsors and the current senior officers,” Garcia said.
This position comes with the added responsibility of leading a multitude of forward thinking members in the right direction.
“One of the changes we as officers plan to implement is find a way to offer more volunteer opportunities through NHS and make it easier to sign up for them,” Garcia said. “A more long term goal of mine is to kind of change the overall feel of NHS. I feel like a lot of people join NHS just to get the graduation cord and to put it on a college application. What I really want to stress next year is the importance of truly serving others, not to benefit yourself in the form of earning hours, but because you truly want to help other people. Once we graduate there will be no more hours forms, but hopefully what NHS can instill in its members is a love for serving those in need.”
Garcia has been put in a unique position and will begin effective immediately as an officer for NHS.
“When I got the text that I was selected I almost started crying I was so excited,” Garcia said. “All of the applicants were amazing and I feel like any of us would have made an equally good NHS president. I feel really blessed to have been chosen to lead NHS.”
