Okay, I know what you’re thinking, ‘cartoons are for kids, cartoons are stupid, blah, blah, blah.’ While yes, so many cartoons are made to just keep children distracted enough so the parents can take a break, there are some out there that people of all ages can enjoy. Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe is one of those shows.

The show follows Steven, a fourteen year old human-alien hybrid. His mom lead a team of aliens, The Crystal Gems, to defend the earth. After his mom passes, the other aliens teach him how to control his alien powers and also a couple of life lessons along the way. At first glance the show already seems odd, three rock aliens living on earth and raising their friend’s half human half rock alien child and fighting other corrupted rock aliens. But when you actually watch it, the show deals with a lot more than the typical cartoon story line. The show includes a lot of things you don’t normally see in kids shows or even shows in general, like LGBTQ+ characters and relationships, and immense racial diversity. They also conquer things like grief and mental illness, and the back stories are quite interesting. The show’s creator, Rebecca Sugar, really did create an entire universe.

If all that sounds a little too deep for your taste, the show manages to still make most episodes really light and happy, leaving you with a warm feeling inside. And on top of all of that, they all sing some pretty catchy stories every once in a while. So next time you’re sick at home, you’re feeling kind of down, or you’re just in the mood to binge watch something, look up Steven Universe and enjoy all, as of this posting, 113 episodes of pure joy.
