On January 17th, there was an explosive outrage from the Nigerian people as it was reported one of their army jets mistakenly dropped a bomb into a refugee camp. The accidental drop wounded and killed refugees and humanitarian workers alike, including soldiers and members of the Red Cross, the casualties continue to rise into the hundreds as injuries worsen.

The fighter plane was originally sent out to search for members of Boko Haram, an Islamist terrorist group located in Nigeria that is known largely for the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls in 2014.

The camp was home to a large number of refugees that had fled danger and volunteers that were helping them rest and recover, it was also located near areas where attacks by Boko Haram were increasing.

The jet was originally sent out with geographic coordinates in order to investigate information from an anonymous source claiming that members of the terrorist group were gathering and preparing an attack on a military post that was close by.

After hearing about the accidental attack, Nigerians are furious with the mistake and have taken to social media to express their outrage. Many can not understand how the military made such a devastating accident that led to the tragedy, others are sympathizing with the victims and criticizing the army. Most are in mourning of the victims, devastated with the additional pain they have had to face after escaping once.

Immediate investigations will be put into the incident to see what was behind the critical error, and how it may be prevented from happening again in the future. After the attacks in recent weeks by Boko Haram, many Nigerians are fearing that the impact of the accidental bombing will cause the attacks to increase in number and size, and that Boko Haram will try and take advantage of the situation.
