The Bolts are bolting and San Diego is not happy

The first of three logos released

The San Diego chargers are no more. Now the California based team is moving to Los Angeles (where the team was initially founded in 1960, though they only stayed for one season). This major move was made because of the promise of a bigger and better stadium, which the team has been in search of for a while. When it became clear that the Chargers would not receive the money necessary to build an expanded stadium in San Diego, Chairman, Dean Spanos made the final decision to move. This relocation has come at a major cost- the Chargers are facing abandonment by the San Diego fan base and LA citizens are not all in the most welcoming of moods.

To top off fan interactions, following the announcement that the Chargers would be moving to LA, the production team revealed their new team logo a giant “LA” with a lightning bolt shooting out from the L, which resulted in mass chaos and ridicule from the internet. As a result of the jokes and hate, the Chargers then debuted a second logo, this time with gold letters and a baby blue background, their color scheme prior. Somehow even the second was not good enough, because the team revealed a final logo with original style of the old logo, but now with the same blue and gold colors as the second unveiled symbol.

When the President of Business Operations A. G. Spanos was asked for an explanation of the arguably ugly logos and three changes to it in one day, Spanos explained that the logo change was meant to further “launch [their] brand into the market and “supplement” rather than replace the current and lasting logo. He went on to say how they “miscalculated how the logo would be received, and [they had] taken it out of the rotation”. He made sure it was known, “If we make a mistake, we own it, learn from it, and move on without looking back”.

Ridicule over logo changes is not the only thing the team must face. Moving companies in San Diego are refusing to help with the Chargers relocation; two dozen companies have made a pact to not help the team relocate, with the hope it will force them to stay in San Diego. They have even created a website: WeWontMoveYouChargers.com, with the main motto: “We decree, henceforth, that we shall unite as a perfect union of professional movers in agreeance (sic) to not aid the San Diego Chargers’ move to Los Angeles.”. Check out their website to see the list and justifications on their undying loyalty to the team and dislike of Spanos. To make matters even more dire, eight companies in LA have joined in the denial of service to the team.

With the mass uproar over this move, from fans and outsiders alike, the Chargers have a lot to do to gain back the approval and followers they formerly had. Past die hard fans have been returning their old jerseys, hats and other Chargers’ apparel, and hundreds on the internet have been mocking the logo change. Hopefully these events are not predictors of what will come in the future of the Chargers.
