Doctor Strange
Immersed in kaleidoscopic visuals
I saw the Marvel movie, Doctor Strange, over the weekend expecting a simply okay movie. I normally know a lot about most things Marvel related, but I never read or researched anything Doctor Strange related because it has never caught my attention. Because of that, I went into this movie armed only with what I knew from the trailers.
Though the trailers seemed cheesy, Guardians of the galaxy, taught me to not judge a movie by its trailer, so I decided to give it a shot. Immediately, the opening of the movie had me hooked with an interesting story and great acting by Benedict Cumberbatch. As the movie progressed, I was enraptured by the abstract images of the other dimensions created and explored by the characters in this movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch has an intense performance; sardonic, conceited and witty, he manages to fit perfectly in the comic book world. Cumberbatch also does a spectacular job of playing a very conflicted and arrogant character reminiscent of his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC show Sherlock.
The story was predictable but entertaining and kept my attention well. There were the bits of sarcasm and witty humor: classic staples of any Marvel movie. It included both moments to pull on the heart strings and moments to quench the thirst for fight scenes. Overall, it was a well-rounded movie that could please whoever is in the audience.
The aspect of the movie I found most enjoyable was the kaleidoscopic visual details. There were a few scenes that were a bit off and clashing to the main flow of the movie and art, but overall the director, Scott Derrickson, created some very hypnotic and Inception-like scenes.
If you are in the mood for an entertaining and easy to follow movie for your weekend, Doctor Strange is a great choice. It will make you laugh and is not as cheesy as it looks in the trailers. You should not go in expecting a movie to have you thinking like Interstellar, or The Prestige but instead expect a quality Marvel movie. Find a date, some friends or family and watch it yourself.
