Person of the Week: Brennan Munson

Brennan Munson and his choice to join the Marines

November 5, 2016

It is getting to be the time of year where most seniors are frantically finishing up their college applications and checking for acceptance or decline letters, but some students are applying for other dreams, or rather, enlisting in them.

Senior Brennan Munson will be officially sworn into the marine corps this week as a Poole (until he is deemed a Marine at the end of boot camp). The choice to enlist is a major one, and he did it with an enthusiasm to be proud of.

“SSGT Davis met me when I attended a PT session at the recruiter’s office with all the other Pooles. That PT is how I got launched into the whole process because of how much I enjoyed it.” Munson said. “I threw up three times and have never been so exhausted in my life, but when asked the question about whether or not I still wanted to join, I answered absolutely.”

This challenge was what motivated him in his decision.

“I enjoyed how terrible it was. It was fun.” Munson said. “The people were great and I already knew I wanted to join the Marines.”

Ultimately, the choice he made to join was one inspired by that want to help others.

“The final decision for me to join the marines specifically came when I realized that there is no way for me to better help other people then for me to be there, face to face with the problems and dangers that others are facing, and solving whatever that problem may be.” Munson said.

These admiral desires have shaped Munson’s outlook on how he hopes to pursue his future in the marines.

“The only real hope I have out of all this is that someone, somewhere, is truly happy to have met me and received the assistance I can give them.” Munson said. “I hope that I’ll make a difference in the world. Because that’s really what I want to do.”

Joining the marines is life changing; Munson must be prepared to put his life on the line for his country when he is officially a marine.

“Now that it’s actually happening the realization that this is one of the most important moments of my life is setting in. I’m swearing into the marine corps next week. This week is my last week as a civilian.” Munson said. “I will be a part of something much bigger than myself. For the time being, I’m still a part of something much bigger than myself, and that’s the Willowbrooke Recruiting Station.”

With such a large journey ahead of him, Munson anticipates great things in the future; prepared for whatever comes.

“I want nothing more than to help others. Even if it’s the most minuscule and tiny way, helping other people has always been I path I knew I was going to go down.” Munson said.
