Rant: Sorry I’m Poor
why financial aid is not given to the wealthy
To the girl who complained about having too much money for financial aid: I am sorry you do not qualify. I am sorry your family makes several times more than mine. I am sorry your family has a big house and a nice pool and does not struggle to pay rent for your small apartment every month. I am sorry that you have been well off your whole life, so well off that government and colleges decided to give it’s money to people who actually need it.
I am one of those people. Actually, I am pretty sure at least million people need it more than you.
While your family is able to pay for your entire education and just chooses not to, my situation is quite the opposite.
Unlike you, there is no way my family can send me to college without the help of financial aid. Financial aid is made for people like me, who went without money for lunch for about two years, who hates to ask their parents for money, who hears their mom crying at night about our empty fridge. People who need a chance to improve their financial situation with education.
So you can not go to the pretentious university of your dreams. Big whoop. I never even had the opportunity to dream that big. In fact, until one of my friends made it clear I could get a lot of help from FAFSA, I did not even think going to an actual university was an option. I thought community college was the best I was going to get, and even then I was worried about the money.
If financial aid gave money to people who already had it, there would not be as much for the people who need as much of it as possible. The fact of the matter is, your family can pay for your education, just like they have paid for everything else you have ever wanted.
I am so sorry I deserve as much of a chance at education as you.
