The Bat has New Wings
The newest addition to the caped crusaders suits
There are few character designs as iconic as the Batman.
The Dark Knight’s paraphernalia, including his bat-a-rangs, grappling hook, cape and cowl has been passed down through multiple incarnations in varying mediums like television, cinema and of course comic books.
It is for this reason that a new design for any Batman is always a risk. To change a character’s design, there has to be a plausible cause, whether it is to modernize the character or simply shock audiences into paying close attention to a new story arch. This is true to form in the newest photo released of Ben Affleck’s Batman via Zack Snyder’s twitter.
The new suit, pictured above, is known as the tactical suit. The theme of the suit being power and efficiency. The suit looks fantastic. The body especially plays homage to more advanced armored suits found in the comics. Everything about this suit is exceptional except for one key element. The cowl. To the everyday viewer, the headpiece may seem as interesting as any other design, but to those who follow comics extensively, this costume is all too reminiscent of Batman’s alternate universe counterpart and enemy, Owlman.
The design of the headpiece’s small and wide ears are eerily similar. While the similarities are a bit distracting, the all around design of the suit is very sleek and appealing. The clunkier and less efficient power suit seen in Batman v. Superman was actually perfect for the introduction to the character.
It was a good starting point and this new suit is the next natural progression. A fine reflection on the character becoming a more refined and powerful Batman. If Zack Snyder pays as much attention to the story and pace of his movies as he does on character design and gloomy filters, this new era of DC films may achieve the level of success that audiences have been hoping for the past few years.
