Person of the Week: Emily Morrison

Most of us have a clear vision; a path for what we want in our lives, but few seem to dedicate so much of their time and energy to their passions like this Wildcat does.

“I’m a pre-professional dancer,” Junior Emily Morrison said. “I’m basically at a training company for the professional company.”

She has been dancing for a total of 12 years, and has been a pre-professional for four of those years. Over the summer, she traveled all over the country to attend specific camps to improve her dance skills, and to help her network with different dance companies for the future.

“I went to a summer intensive in Chicago for four weeks,” Morrison said. “It’s called Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and I went to the teen intensive. It’s basically a ballet program”

There, she spent time immersed in the world of dance. She used this as an opportunity to network with different dance companies from across the nation.

“Learning the actual company’s repertoire, we had members from the company and a second company come in and teach us” Morrison said.

She also traveled to Los Angeles to attend another intensive focusing on Musical Theater.

“It’s called DancerPalooza, and the one I was specifically at was [called] Marquee. It was for a week long.” Morrison said.

Here at Cy Woods, you can find her involved in the musical theater as an assistant choreographer.

“Once a month, we have a performance singing different songs from different musicals, and I’m one of the assistant choreographers for that.” Morrison said. “Our first [song] we are doing is ‘Hard Knock Life’ from Annie.”

Her dancing career has already taken her to far places, and she does not plan to step down as she plans to go to the professional level while she is in college.

She has already done things like taking a dance class with the famous dance teacher Sonya Tayeh from the TV show, So You Think You Can Dance? and danced with numerous other famous dancers, like Mike Esperanza and Cat Cogliandro.
