Freddie Mercury Would be Proud of Von Zimmer

Von Zimmer is an indie rock band who just released their debut album. Named after Freddie Mercury’s extra set of teeth, “Freddie’s Extra Teeth” is definitely unique. The singer’s voice is very soft and raspy but compliments the instruments nicely. Overall the songs on the album are very catchy and have guitar and drums as the dominant instruments. The lyrics to the songs are a bit confusing, but due to the emotion in which the singer sings, the listener can tell that they are meaningful.  A few songs that stood out to me are “Echo”, “Where Were You” and “Archimedes Beer”. In “Echo” the guitar matches perfectly with the pitches in the singers voice and the song ends with the guitar solo echoing and fading, parallel to the song’s name. “Where Were You” stood out because of its use of acoustic guitar instead of electric. Even though it still has drums, it keeps a mellow feel throughout. “Archimedes Beer” has the same electric guitar and drums, but is just extremely catchy. You can’t help but nod your head and tap your feet to the beat. While there were many positive things about this album, there is one thing that annoyed me; all of the songs sound the same. They seem to have the same beat and same notes, however the unique lyrics work in the band’s favor. Grade: B
