Diving Under the Sea with Mulan

The weekend of October 15-17 the Cy Woods Theatre company performed the Little Mermaid jr. and Mulan jr. The show was fun for all; the audience was filled with people of all ages that were constantly laughing along. The jokes in the script were executed very well and had the audience laughing many times. There were jokes that were funny for the children and some that were subtly aimed at the adults. The vocals throughout both Mulan and the Little Mermaid were over all really good. Mulan, played by Emily Chang, truly captured the essence of her character. She was strong, spunky, and beautiful. Mushu, played by Hananiah Montoya, brought a whole new level of hilarity to the character.  Not only was the script itself funny, Montoya played the words like a pro. Whenever her character was on stage the audience was drawn to him, laughter followed nearly every line. Captain Shang, played by Destin Moreno, executed role with the strong attitude that Captain Shang needed and deserved.

Ashlyn Maddox played Ariel very well. She was energetic and she sang every song beautifully. The voice that stood out the most in the Little Mermaid was Finn Adams, who played Flounder. During the song “She’s in Love” he wowed the audience with his ability to hit the high notes smoothly and beautifully. Scuttle was played by Jens Sloeveren. He was hilarious and brought a whole new level of energy to Scuttle. The tap dance he took part of was choreographed and preformed with an energy that kept the audience entertained. Kaylyn Atkinson was the perfect Ursula. She played the role with a demanding demeanor that matched her character precisely.

The costumes for both parts of the show were both beautiful, creative, and unique. Ursula’s costume was by far the most eye catching. Its tentacles definitely brought the character to life.

Excusing a few very minor technical and costume difficulties, the show was an overall great production. It deserves to be seen over and over again.
