Cy Woods Vs Kingwood Recap
October 27, 2020
The Cy-Woods Wildcats started off the season on a good note as they topped their opponent the Kingwood Mustangs 21-7 in the season opener.
It wasn’t a special win or a blowout as both teams only put up a combined 28 points, but both offense and defense did their job as it was good enough to secure the week one win.
The offense did what they needed to do and put up 21 points in week one. Senior running back Trayse Holmes had himself a night as he was handed the ball 35 times out of the 72 total plays the offense ran the entire game. Holmes rushed for 132 yards and scored his first 2 touchdowns on the year. Starting quarterback Dylan Cormier also had himself a solid performance as he finished the night with 125 yards with a 14 yard touchdown pass to senior receiver John Niles, giving Cormier a .643 completion percentage and a 116.7 passer rating on the night. Cy-Woods offense always seemed to get the first down converted when it mattered the most as they converted 10 third Downs week one. They also did it more than anyone else as they lead the league in third down conversions after the first week of the season.
Offense wasn’t the only side performing well as the defense limited their opponent to a single touchdown over the span of the entire game. They did better than most of the league as they allowed the least amount of both total rushing yards and total points scored against them. Sophomore Dylan Rodgers was all over Kingwood’s offense as he finished the night with 10 tackles, leading the team. Senior defensive lineman Christopher Agnew had himself a couple big plays as he caused a crucial goal line fumble that was ultimately recovered by Woods, letting them keep their big lead and getting to extend their lead even more.
Special teams also contributed as kicker Michael Fernandez ended week one with a missed field goal attempt but finished the game with 100% PAT attempts, making each attempt after each of the 3 touchdowns scored.
The Wildcats will look to start the season 2-0 next week as they take on Katy High School Saturday Oct. 3 at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
